Umbrella & Excess Lability

As a part of a comprehensive insurance portfolio, having a liability umbrella policy is crucial in today’s litigious society. The concept of having liability coverage is to minimize the chances of personal financial loss due to negligence. This type of policy adds a layer of liability over your home, rental properties, auto, boat and other personal lines types of policies. Umbrella policies are typically sold in increments of $1million.

Umbrella or excess liability policies are available as a standalone policy or can be purchased in conjunction with an auto policy. The most cost effective way to purchase an umbrella policy is with an auto carrier who also offers an umbrella policy. The cost of an umbrella policy may only cost a couple of hundred dollars for a $1 million of coverage. This may be one of the most cost effective insurance investments you can make.

To qualify for an umbrella policy you must have a home insurance policy and an auto policy. Additionally, you must have specified minimal limits of liability coverage on the policies. The liability on the home insurance must be at least $300,000. Where the liability on the auto policy must have at least 100/300/100 limits.

The base price of a $1 million umbrella policy typically consists of 1 home and 1 auto. Additional premium is added when other types of risks are included.

  • Additional vehicles.
  • Additional residential properties.
  • Youthful drivers.
  • Recreational vehicles.
  • Umbrella limits exceeding $1million.

Umbrella policies are also offering optional limits for Uninsured Motorist coverage. This coverage option is for those who are unable to obtain higher limits of UM on their auto policy.
